My older two kids, 8 and 6, seem to be incapable of learning to tie their shoes. I have showed them so many times, but they just don’t get it. They have also gotten big enough that it’s almost impossible to find Velcro shoes for them. I tried those spiral spring-like laces, but they didn’t work very well and were way overpriced. Necessity is the mother of invention, so I found a way to quickly, easily, and cheaply turn lace shoes into slip-on shoes. I’ll break it down.
- get a pair of shoes with laces
- get some 1/4″ braided elastic: usually available in black or white at roughly 50 cents per yard (I tried round elastic for an appearance more similar to shoe laces, but it kept coming untied.)
- remove the laces from the shoes
- re-lace the shoes with a length of elastic
- tie tightly
- slip on
And, if like mine, your kids also lose shoes all the time, you can get a bunch of cheap, matching pairs, and give them all elastic for laces. I highly doubt I’m the first to think of this, but I thought I would share it anyway.
