Easy DIY Slip-On Shoes

My older two kids, 8 and 6, seem to be incapable of learning to tie their shoes.  I have showed them so many times, but they just don’t get it.  They have also gotten big enough that it’s almost impossible to find Velcro shoes for them.  I tried those spiral spring-like laces, but they didn’t work very well and were way overpriced.  Necessity is the mother of invention, so I found a way to quickly, easily, and cheaply turn lace shoes into slip-on shoes.  I’ll break it down.

  1. get a pair of shoes with laces
  2. get some 1/4″ braided elastic: usually available in black or white at roughly 50 cents per yard (I tried round elastic for an appearance more similar to shoe laces, but it kept coming untied.)
  3. remove the laces from the shoes
  4. re-lace the shoes with a length of elastic
  5. tie tightly
  6. slip on

And, if like mine, your kids also lose shoes all the time, you can get a bunch of cheap, matching pairs, and give them all elastic for laces.  I highly doubt I’m the first to think of this, but I thought I would share it anyway.
